We asked our Designer, Jen Lapsiuk, what to consider when creating the perfect summer oasis.

1. Function

The first thing you will need to decide on is the primary function of your outdoor space. Do you want to create an area for lounging, dining, entertaining or perhaps privacy from your neighbours? Once you have the focus of your space, you can start the design layout. We like to start from the ground up. To bring some natural elements onto a concrete patio, try interlocking wood tiles or bring artificial grass or turf in to bring in greenery. Outdoor rugs will also cozy up a space and extend your indoor living outside.

2. Flexibility

For small spaces, it’s always important to try and source double-purpose items. For instance, an outdoor chair with an ottoman can be placed outside against one another to create a lounger. Flexibility is key! An outdoor tall bistro table can help maximize a view. Making sure your dining chairs tuck nicely into the table also helps in a small space or go with a bench that can double up for dining, extra seating and storage.

3. Layout

If you are lucky enough to have a large outdoor entertaining area, create different areas for various functions. Create a living area with a TV to watch the game or movies with friends and family. Incorporate your BBQ into a full bar area so that you can cook and mingle with guests. An outdoor fireplace or firepit for lounging under the stars after dinner is the perfect way to cap off a summer night.

4. Greenery

When in doubt, go green! What better way to create an outdoor oasis than with pots and planters. Real or artificial hedges provide greenery and privacy from neighbours. Low maintenance potter herbs both look great and add to a delicious meal while enjoying al fresco dining.

5. Accessories

Don’t be afraid to treat your outdoor area as you would your living room. There’s so much “indoor-outdoor” accessories and furnishing available nowadays. From outdoor-treated cushons to candles, lanterns and even art, the possibilities are endless. When the sun sets, create more ambience with twinkly string lights in your outdoor oasis.

We hope these tips help you create your perfect outdoor space!

Happy Summer!
